Catalytic Collaboration: Philanthropic Opportunities to Support Just Transitions in Africa

3 November 2022

The African Climate Foundation and Bloomberg Philanthropies, together with co-hosts the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) and the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), will host Catalytic Collaboration: Philanthropic Opportunities to Support Just Transitions in Africa, an interactive conversation between philanthropy, development and finance specialists and energy practitioners. If you are working in philanthropy, development, decarbonisation, investment and energy, we hope you will consider joining this event at COP27.

Philanthropy can catalyse funding by pooling its investments. In the context of climate philanthropy, the impact of limited (but more agile and flexible) philanthropic funds can be increased by unique partnerships. In the energy sector, there are different forms of large-scale collaborations emerging, and the philanthropy sector has engaged in major new partnerships with the private sector, development agencies and governments to address the climate crisis.

Despite these positive trends globally, Africa remains underfunded and underinvested – both in terms of climate philanthropy and climate finance.

Africa’s climate transitions present an opportunity to support new development pathways characterised by a low carbon future, which taps into the continent’s abundant clean energy resources, but more needs to be done.

The event will be livestreamed here.
