Government of Malawi sign MOU with the ACF for investment into climate adaptation

On 5 June 2024, Malawi’s Secretary to the President and Cabinet, Colleen Zamba signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on behalf of the Government of Malawi with the African Climate Foundation. This MOU seeks to deliver technical support to Malawi’s Office of the President and Cabinet with regards to climate adaptation and investment as well as the development of an Adaptation and Resilience Investment Platform (ARIP).

This MOU will provide Malawi, particularly enterprises across the country, access to innovative investment mechanisms in support of projects that are supportive of the country’s efforts to adapt to a more resilient economy against the effects of climate change.

“This is a milestone in our recognition and commitment to a whole of government approach to building greater resilience to the effects of climate change. We welcome the support and assistance of the African Climate Foundation that this MOU represents and the partnership that we now take forward,” said Zamba.

Irene Karani, Special Adviser to the African Climate Foundation and signatory to the MOU. said the Foundation “is grateful for being welcomed by the Government of Malawi, and for the engaging discussions that we have enjoyed to develop this first step in our relationship together. We look forward to working with government and businesses across Malawi, as together we seek to further build the economy through adaptation to the challenges already faced by climate change”.

The African Climate Foundation will now be appointing an expert adviser to support the Office of the President and Cabinet working with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Climate Change, as well as the many other MDAs of Government, international development partners and the private sector. This as a first step to developing an investment platform to support business and projects across the country.
