Carlos, a Guinea-Bissau national, is the Chairperson of the Board. He is a member of the UNs’ Committee for Development Policy. Carlos is currently serving as an Honorary Professor at the Nelson Mandela School of Public Governance, and he is a fellow of Chatham House, Cambridge Institute for Sustainable Leadership, SOAS Development Leadership Program, ODI Global, and International Science Council. He is also a board member for a number of institutions, including WRI and Climate Works Foundation. He has occupied several leadership positions across the UN, including Policy Director for Secretary-General Kofi Annan, Head of UNDP’s Policy Bureau, Head of UNITAR and the UN System Staff College, UN Resident Coordinator in Zimbabwe and Brazil, and Executive Secretary of the UNECA from 2012 to 2016. He was selected in 2017 as a member of the African Union Reform team and in 2018 as the AU High Representative for Partnerships with Europe. He has served in the Global Commission for Economy and Climate (serviced by WRI), the Global Commission for the Future of Work (serviced by ILO) and the Global Commission on the Geostrategy of Energy Transformation (serviced by IRENA). He served on the COP28 UAE Advisory Committee in 2023 and he is the COP 30 Brazilian Presidency Special Envoy for Africa.

Adnan is currently the Special Envoy for the Middle East under the Brazilian COP30 Presidency, building on a distinguished career in diplomacy, development, and climate leadership. A Kenyan diplomat and development economist, he served as the first Director-General of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) from 2011 to 2019, where he was instrumental in advancing the global renewable energy agenda. In 2022, he was appointed CEO of COP28 UAE, where he led the summit that delivered the landmark UAE Consensus.

Adnan has also held several senior roles within the United Nations, including as Head of the UN System Chief Executives Board Secretariat, Director of the Secretariat for the UN Secretary-General’s High-Level Panel on System-wide Coherence, and Head of the UN Environment Programme’s New York Office. He has been a Senior Fellow at Harvard’s Belfer Center and holds an MPhil in Development Studies from the University of Sussex.

Dr Ameenah Gurib-Fakim is a biodiversity scientist, former President of Mauritius (2015–2018), and the country’s first female head of state. She has held leadership roles as Managing Director of CIDP R&I, Professor and Pro Vice-Chancellor at the University of Mauritius, and Manager at the Mauritius Research Council. Her pioneering research bridges science and Indigenous knowledge, with a focus on medicinal plants and sustainable development. A recipient of the L’Oréal-UNESCO and African Union awards for Women in Science, she holds multiple honorary doctorates and has authored widely on biodiversity and climate resilience. She continues to advocate for science-based policy, women in STEM, and investment in research and innovation across the Global South.

Stefan helped to establish the African Climate Foundation. He is the Executive Director of the Foundation for International Law for the Environment (FILE). He is a human rights lawyer and an internationally recognised leader on climate assessment, scenario planning and mitigation work, including climate litigation, research and programme management.

Prior to founding FILE, Stefan served as Senior Advisor for Climate for the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF). In 2020, he founded the MAPS (Mitigation Action Plans and Scenarios) Programme – a collaboration amongst countries to build national scenarios to inform action towards a lower emissions future.

Anokhi is the Climate Change Lead at Yellowwoods Investments and also works independently outside of this role. She has 15 years of experience cutting across urban planning and infrastructure, environmental sustainability, health, and education, with a demonstrated history of working in academia, non-profits and management consulting. She has worked extensively in India and South Africa and has project experience in across Africa.

Anokhi was an Associate Partner at Dalberg Advisors and led their work on inclusive cities and infrastructure. She also played an instrumental role in setting up the Indian Institute for Human Settlements (IIHS), an institute focused on the challenges and opportunities of India’s urban transition. Her career began in South Africa as an Overseas Development Institute (ODI) Fellow, conducting research that fed into provincial health sector policy.

Dana is an independent consultant. She started her career in New York at Moody’s Investor Services in their Default Risk Research Group. Dana later moved to corporate banking at Société Générale, where she worked in the Loan Work-Out Group dealing with bankruptcies and loan restructurings. Dana gained further experience from the private equity fund, Cerberus Capital Management, where she invested in distressed companies. Back in South Africa, she has been involved with a range of entities (companies, government agencies and NGOs) and her roles vary from being the restructuring officer, to advisory, or board participation.

Ruwa is Programme Lead for the Quadrature Climate Foundation (QCF). She has 15 years’ experience shaping high-impact, multi-million dollar strategies, grant portfolios and partnerships across Africa, and other emerging markets and developing economies. In her current role, Ruwa is delivering global grant investment portfolios on resilience, energy transition minerals, and adaptation and has worked on climate transitions in land use, food systems, transport, and clean energy. She has deep experience engaging policy makers, donors, corporates, and community actors to drive just transitions, resilience and sustainable development. Ruwa has worked as Africa Regional Coordinator for the United Nations Global Compact advancing corporate sustainability across Africa, Research and Policy Advisor at ActionAid International, and as a Carnegie Research Fellow at the Global Change Institute at WITS University.

Faustina Fynn-Nyame, currently serving as the Executive Director for Africa at CIFF (Children’s Investment Fund Foundation), embarked on her journey as a nurse in the UK. Her career trajectory saw her transition from private healthcare management in London to remarkable leadership roles across 25 nations in Africa, Asia, and Latin America in various organisations.

Beyond her professional accomplishments, Faustina is a passionate advocate for women’s and girls’ rights. She has played a pivotal role in driving policy changes to improve access to reproductive health services in both West and East Africa. Moreover, she firmly believes in empowering the girl child through enhanced health, education, and economic opportunities, envisioning a thriving and self determining Africa.

Faustina’s commitment to nurturing future leaders is evident in her advocacy efforts and mentorship initiatives. Her impactful contributions to the field have earned her recognition, including being named among the Top 100 influential African women in 2021 by Advance Media and most recently being honoured with the 2024 Princess Water Award of Hope by the Georgie Badiel Foundation.

Bernadette Moffat is the Executive Director of The ELMA Philanthropies Services (Africa), based in Cape Town, South Africa where she oversees the philanthropic work of the ELMA Group of Foundations in southern Africa. Bernadette serves on the Boards of The ELMA Philanthropies Services (US) Inc., The ELMA South Africa Foundation, and is a founding member and Chairperson for the ELMA Masana Foundation board. Bernadette also serves as a Trustee of the Discovery Foundation, which supports the education and training of medical specialists in South Africa and is on the board of Ilifa Labantwana, an organisation that seeks to ensure universal access and quality outcomes for young children in South Africa.

Prior to joining ELMA in 2006, Bernadette was chief executive officer of the Women’s Development Bank Trust, an organisation that promotes the socio-economic development, advancement, and empowerment of South African women. Previously Bernadette served as a consultant to the Commission on Gender Equality advising them on issues of women’s economic empowerment which published her work The Working Woman’s Manual a volume on women and labour law in South Africa (1996).

Bernadette has international experience as an entrepreneur and corporate lawyer having worked for a major law firm in Washington DC, consulted for the United Nations Development Programme and started family businesses. Honoured by France with the Ordre de Merité in 2007, she holds a magna cum laude BA degree from Wellesley College in the United States and a Juris Doctor degree from Columbia University also in the United States.

Saliem is a global thought leader at the intersection of climate and development. With a career spanning over two decades, he has been instrumental in founding transformative organisations, including the African Climate Foundation, where he serves as Executive Director. Under his leadership, the Foundation has become a beacon for innovative climate solutions across the continent. As Chairman of the Atlantic Special Economic Zone in South Africa, Saliem champions the advancement of a green industrial hub dedicated to clean technology, exemplifying his commitment to sustainable development. The author of Navigating Africa’s Climate Development Nexus, Saliem has shared his insights on numerous international and regional platforms, provoking thought and inspiring action on critical environmental issues.

Saliem brings diverse and multidisciplinary experience to his work. His journey began in biotechnology, biodiversity, and conservation, before he expanded his focus to address issues related to energy, economics, and climate change. Recently, he has delved into the realms of political economy, finance, and the intricate relationship between climate and development. Saliem has a keen interest in philosophy, political economy, and political science as well behaviour economics, which enriches his understanding of these complex fields. In addition to his influential roles, Saliem serves as an adjunct senior lecturer at the University of Cape Town.

Nazirah works closely with the Executive Director and office. She brings over 20 years of administrative experience, including comprehensive project coordination. Before joining the African Climate Foundation in 2022, Nazirah spent seven years at WWF South Africa, supporting the Policy and Futures Unit, where she also worked closely with Saliem Fakir. Prior to that, she spent a decade working in the higher education sector.

LeRoy joined the African Climate Foundation in 2024 as Chief Financial Officer. A Chartered Accountant, he brings extensive experience in financial management, with over 10 years in the non-profit sector. His expertise includes risk assessment, budgeting, forecasting, variance analysis, cash flow management, compliance monitoring, and both financial and narrative report writing. He is also skilled in reviewing, developing, and implementing financial policies and systems.

Beyond her finance and operations expertise, Anisa has a strong interest in technology and its application in business—particularly in re-engineering processes through coding, robotic process automation (RPA), and analytics.

Ellen is based in Kenya and, before joining the African Climate Foundation, oversaw the extractives and nuclear energy portfolios at the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) South Africa. She has been working on questions of sustainable economic development for the past ten years and has a keen interest in geopolitics, political economy and gender issues. She holds a Bachelor of Social Sciences from the University of Cape Town, an LLB from the University of South Africa, a Bachelor of Commerce Honour’s degree and a Master of Commerce degree from the University of the Witwatersrand.

Through his role, Zira supports climate policy implementation at the Nigerian Ministry of Environment and the government’s Energy Transition Office. He previously worked at Quadrature Climate Foundation where he managed their energy transition portfolio, covering decarbonisation and clean energy deployment in 51 countries. In Zira’s recent role at the Natural Resource Governance Institute, he led in-country research and drove the uptake of extractive sector data in Nigeria. He holds an MPhil in Public Policy from the University of Cambridge, MSc in Applied Economics from Colorado School of Mines, and a BSc in Information Systems from Girne American University.

Lamine is based in Senegal and has more than 20 years’ experience implementing projects in West Africa, including 12 years as an M&E Manager. Previously, Lamine was the Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning Manager in Ghana for a sub-regional project, West Africa Biodiversity and Climate Change supporting ECOWAS, the Abidjan Convention and more. He conducted a baseline review of policies on coastal and marine related issues under the intervention of the West Africa Coastal Area Resilience Infrastructure Project, which was led by the World Bank. Lamine holds a Specialised Graduate Diploma (DESS) in Regional Planning, Decentralisation and Local Development, as well as a Master’s degree in Public Infrastructure Management.

Baba has a PhD in Climate Change and Education and is a results-driven Researcher with expertise in climate change management and sustainability.  He has a solid track record of developing innovative solutions to mitigate environmental challenges and drive sustainable development.  His key skills are Climate Change Science and Policy, Environmental Impact Assessment, Sustainability Reporting and Metrics, Data Analysis and Visualization, and Policy Analysis and Advocacy.

Geeta has seven years’ experience in the climate and just transition space in South Africa. She spent five years at the National Business Initiative (NBI) where she worked on building business capacity for climate and just transition ambition and collective action together with government and other stakeholders. While Geeta still provides project management and research support to the NBI, at the African Climate Foundation she leads the South Africa just energy transition programme, including managing a portfolio of grantees and providing support to its fiscal sponsorship entities housed within the office of the Presidency. Geeta has her MPhil degree in Sustainable Development from the University of Stellenbosch.

Francis joined the African Climate Foundation in 2020 and worked closely with Saliem Fakir as his Executive Assistant, where she gained significant experience in the energy transition sector. In her current role she focuses mainly on South Africa’s just energy transition. Francis is based in Cape Town and holds a BSc in Environmental and Geographical Sciences from the University of Cape Town and a Postgraduate Diploma in Sustainable Development from the Sustainability Institute at Stellenbosch University.

Sahele was a senior power engineer at the African Development Bank (AfDB) Ethiopian Country Office, where he managed the energy portfolio for projects in Ethiopia. He also worked on the structuring of energy projects and results-based operations and provided technical support on policy in the energy sector and other areas relevant to energy, environment and climate change.

Sahele was previously the director for Energy Study and Development  at the Ministry of Water, Irrigation and Energy of Ethiopia. He also served at the Ethiopian Electricity Agency as head of the Department of Electrical Works Control. Sahele started his career as a distribution engineer at the national electricity utility, the Ethiopian Electric Power Corporation. He holds an MSc degree in Electric Power Engineering.

Willard’s interests lie in climate policy, green finance, industrialisation, political economy, and sustainable development.

Willard is a Master of Development Economics and International Development graduate from the University of Cape Town, a 2018 Mandela Rhodes scholar. He also holds a Bachelor’s degree in Economics and Development Studies from the University of Zambia. Willard is a former president of the University of Zambia Business and Economics Association.

Before working in magazine publishing, Kelly led media-related initiatives at an NGO, where she deepened her experience in cross-cultural media engagement and conservation through work in the Galapagos Islands, Ecuador, and Peru. Prabhat has been working at the interface of diplomacy, research and advocacy on climate policy for close to two decades. Prior to joining the Foundation, he served as the Senior Policy Specialist on Climate and Energy with India’s G-20 Secretariat at India’s Ministry of External Affairs. In this role, he ably supported the Indian G-20 Sherpa and the Indian negotiating team for building consensus on the Green Development Pact, including on the tripling of Renewable Energy Globally by 2030. He has a strong, political, diplomatic and technical understanding of both the UNFCCC and G-20 processes and their historical evolution, as well as a good understanding of evolving geopolitics of energy transitions and domestic politics in emerging economies.

Having worked in government, think tanks, academia, NGOs and consultancy across Asia, Africa and Europe, he has access to a wide network as well as nuanced understanding of different perspectives on some of the most contentious issues in climate and energy policy. He has published peer-reviewed articles in international journals as well as a number of policy briefs. He holds a PhD from Linköping University, Sweden, a Masters in Forestry Management from Indian Institute of Forest Management and is a Humboldt Fellow.

Irene Karani is a Special Adviser on strategy with a focus on Sustainable Land Use and Agriculture, adaptation, resilience, and advocacy. Previously, she served as the Africa Director for Climate at the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF). With over 30 years of international experience in climate change, natural resource management, and monitoring and evaluation across more than 13 African countries, her career has been both diverse and impactful.

Irene’s professional journey began in academia, where she taught natural resource management disciplines at public and private universities in Kenya. She then transitioned to civil society, developing and implementing various programmes and projects in the development, conservation, and humanitarian sectors. Thereafter, for 18 years, Irene worked as a development consultant, providing policy and programme development, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation services in the climate, natural resources, and development sectors to governments, bilateral and multilateral agencies, civil society, and private sector clients in Africa, Europe, and the United States.

She has authored and co-authored several peer-reviewed papers and articles on climate change and measuring resilience. Additionally, Irene actively contributes to global, regional, and national discussions on Africa’s opportunities and challenges in addressing climate change, advocating for African-led solutions to foster resilient economic development growth.
